In 2013, A Comedian Hired A Skywriter To Write “How Do I Land?” Over Los Angeles

Braunohler used the money he raised on the fundraising website to scrawl a message into the clouds above Los Angeles. ‘How do I land?’ read the message.

Kurt Braunohler hoped to brighten people’s days in downtown Los Angeles for about 20 minutes by hiring “a man in a plane to write stupid things with clouds in the sky.”

The comedian’s prank, however, gained national attention thanks to Reddit. “I learned a lot about Reddit today,” Braunohler said over the phone to the Huffington Post. “And I don’t know who put it up, but I owe it to him to thank him.”

Braunohler used a Kickstarter campaign to raise nearly $7,000 for the project, with the goal of making (at least a few) people laugh:

I think we can all agree that life is pretty bleak place to be a lot of the time. Often you might even think, “Who thought this was a good idea to begin with!?” (God – what a jerk.) But I think that if there’s a way we can, just for a fleeting moment, give strangers an unexpected gift of absurdity, then I think we can make the world a slightly better place.

Braunohler said, “It’s such a stupid thing, and I love stupid.” “I’m just overjoyed that the internet enjoys being stupid as well!”

Backers were given a few options for “stupid things” to write in the sky, according to Braunohler:

“How do I land?”

“Clouds 4 EVA”

“OMG I’m flying!”

Tweet me bro!”

“God’s Fartin’!”

“How do I get down?” Braunohler won, but despite his success, he doesn’t want to make a habit of crowd-funding his comedy. He told the Huffington Post, “I don’t want to be the Kickstarter comedian,” despite the fact that “it’s very tempting to do a bunch of ideas this way.”
